I wrote the same thing you did--that I felt like I was back at square one when reading this. Being the optimist that I am, I like to think that our difficulty with this means that we're reaching a new "level" of theory...and now that I just likened theory to video games...

I used to watch "Star Trek" with my dad too. The Next Generation, right? With Patrick Stewart as Captain Piccard? (Uh, I'm not a dork, what?) And that's what I was trying to hold onto while reading Haraway, but I always felt it slipping away from me, as though the two never quite connected.

That's interesting that you picked out Hawaray's thoughts on the "One." I must have skimmed right over that. I'm not too sure of what she means by the "One" either (Neo from "The Matrix" would be too easy, right?), but do you think that perhaps she's not talking about God, but about the cyborg? Or maybe she's proposing that the cyborg is God? Either way, I'm in the same boat as you...boo, Haraway.

"If you look on MTV or VH1, when they show videos at least, any female performer looks like she could be a clone of another person. How many Lindsey Lohans, Hillary Duffs, and Jessica Simpsons do we need? If I had my way, they’d all be gone because they all suck."

Yeah I definitely know what you mean, because the same can be said for all of mtvs shows. How many Laguna Beaches do we need. I think one wa enough. We have to get out of this crazy loop that says we all have to look a certain way, when we can't. It's like when one thing becomes popular, let's mass produce seven things just like it. Sickening. . . well not as much as your stomach bug.

Hey Meg
It seems like we had similar high school experiences. There was the standard 1 day of health class that talked about sex, but that focused mainly on STD's. As for the condoms and birth control on campus, that does seem a bit ridiculous. Giving somebody a condom does not encourage them to instantly go out and use it. It only means that when they do have sex, it will be done the right way. By not allowing this, the school is controlling the sexual discourse, as Foucault would say.

I have to say that I enjoyed your blog! I agree with you that Butler's work of gender could have interacted with Cho's work. Your example of the 'super girly, super dumb, woman' was a perfect example of how Butler would focus on the roles of gender and the stereotypes they fulfill. I also thought it was interesting how you discussed what Cho was wearing to her event. Since she was wearing bright colors, yet she was wearing pants, with a skirt over it. And her debate over if she is gay/straight would be another perfect example of how Butler would argue about the presence of categories. I think that your references to the typical body image of a woman that was discussed by Cho was also great, yet do you think that this could be tied to Horkeimer and Adorno's view regarding media? When the producers of her Asian show were giving her lessons to become more Asian, and making her lose weight, isn't this just re doing everything that we've lived in life and experienced? Just some things to think about! Great Blog!

I think you did a very in-depth reading of The Tempest. Fanon is definitely enhances the reading of this text. An important aspect of Fanon's theory is that the history of a people is often written by a member of the other race. In this case, Caliban's history is told through Prospero's retelling of it. He is the one who describes Caliban's mother and how evil and wretched of a person he is. If the tale were told by a member of Caliban's own race instead of the one who colonized him, perhaps we would get another angle on Caliban's past.

That is so funny that you bring up Saint Rose because, in a way it ends up forcing students to perform their desires in unhealthy manners. Well force is a strong word, but this I feel causes students to be up in arms about sexual freedom even more. If Saint Rose were to allow condoms to be given out we wouldn't even be having this conversation. So Foucault is right. That this repression in some way is not really to stop us from talking about it, but to channel that talk in an avenue that is going to bring some sort of economic or power gain to the person manipulating the system.

Hi Meg,

I made the same connection to David and the Dog(s). In my blog I noted how every dog David forms a connection to is one that is sad, or crippled and I think that is exactly why he is attached to these dogs. He can relate to their sadness and being alone in the world. I can see David as crippled just like the dogs. After the incident with Melanie is let out, he doesn't know what to do with himself and its was frustrating for me when he refused to defend himself in anyway. His connection with these dogs can really be looked at deeply.
